What is PLT in NSW?

Practical Legal Training is the structured training stage between academic study and admission to the legal profession. For graduates seeking admission in New South Wales, PLT is the practical bridge that develops the skills, values and practice area knowledge set out in the Legal Profession Uniform Admission Rules 2015.

In NSW, applicants for admission apply to the Legal Profession Admission Board (LPAB) for a compliance certificate, then attend an admission ceremony at the Supreme Court of NSW. The Law Society of NSW notes that to engage in legal practice in NSW you must be both admitted and hold a current Australian practising certificate. Admission alone is not enough to practise.

The LPAB’s own guidance states that the PLT prerequisite for NSW admission may be satisfied by successfully completing a PLT course conducted by an LPAB accredited provider, or by a PLT course recognised by another Australian jurisdiction. That second pathway is the one most IOLT graduates use for NSW admission, as explained further below.

PLT for Sydney based law graduates

Most NSW law graduates are based in or around Sydney. For Sydney graduates, the practical question is usually not whetherto do PLT. It is mandatory. The question is how to fit it around the other demands of an early legal career: paralegal work at CBD firms, clerkship commitments, commute pressure from the outer suburbs, and the rolling deadlines that come with trying to be admitted as soon as possible.

IOLT's online delivery is built around these realities. Because the coursework is fully online and start dates are rolling, Sydney graduates can begin their PLT on their own timeline rather than waiting for a semester intake, and can study from home, from a coworking space, or from the desk at their paralegal job during quiet periods. There is no requirement to attend a campus anywhere in Sydney, the wider NSW region, or elsewhere in Australia for the coursework component.

The one unavoidable in person step for Sydney based students is the admission ceremony itself, which is held at the Supreme Court of NSW in Sydney. That is a single day, not a recurring commitment.

Who this page is for

This page is for law graduates and final year students from New South Wales universities, and for graduates from interstate or overseas law schools who plan to apply for admission in NSW.

That includes graduates from universities and academic courses recognised by LPAB, among them:

NSW academic courses recognised by LPAB (selection)University of Sydney, UNSW, UTS, Macquarie University, Western Sydney University, University of Newcastle, University of Wollongong, University of New England, Charles Sturt University, Australian Catholic University, University of Notre Dame, Southern Cross University, Top Education / IMC, and the LPAB Diploma in Law.

Whether you studied in Sydney, Newcastle, Wollongong, Parramatta, Armidale, Dubbo, online, or through the LPAB pathway, the practical question is the same. What is the clearest route from your academic qualification to NSW admission? The rest of this guide walks through that pathway.

Can you do PLT online for NSW admission?

Law graduate studying online PLT coursework from home with laptop and notes

Yes. The LPAB's guidance explicitly recognises PLT courses conducted by providers accredited in other Australian jurisdictions as satisfying the PLT prerequisite for NSW admission. That is the mechanism through which IOLT' s program, accredited by the Legal Practice Board of Western Australia, supports graduates seeking admission in New South Wales.

In practical terms, this means an eligible graduate can complete IOLT's 100% online PLT, obtain a completion letter, and submit it to LPAB as part of a NSW compliance certificate application. The LPAB guide also describes the evidence required for PLT completed outside NSW, including any provider certification that may be needed alongside the standard completion letter.

i
Good to know

IOLT is accredited by the Legal Practice Board of WA, not by LPAB directly. The NSW pathway works because LPAB's own rules deem PLT courses recognised in other Australian jurisdictions to satisfy the NSW PLT prerequisite. For full course details see the PLT course information page.

How the NSW admission pathway works

The full pathway from law school to practising as a solicitor in NSW has five steps. PLT is step two of five, an important reminder that finishing PLT and being able to practise are not the same thing.

Complete your academic qualification

Complete your law degree (LLB, JD, or equivalent) or other recognised academic qualification. LPAB publishes the list of accredited NSW academic courses and also recognises Australian law courses recognised in other jurisdictions.

Complete your Practical Legal Training

Complete an accredited PLT program. For IOLT students, that is the 24 week online course plus 20 days of workplace experience. LPAB's guidance sets out the PLT prerequisite and the evidence required for admission, including the PLT completion letter and, where relevant, provider certification for PLT completed outside NSW. See the full course information for the IOLT program structure.

Apply to LPAB for a compliance certificate

Admission in NSW is governed by Part 2.2 of the Legal Profession Uniform Law (NSW)and the Legal Profession Admission Rules 2015. Once your PLT is complete, you apply to LPAB for a compliance certificate evidencing that you have met the academic and practical requirements for admission.

Attend the Supreme Court admission ceremony

If your compliance certificate is issued, you attend an admission ceremony at the Supreme Court of NSW in Sydney, take the oath or affirmation, and sign the Supreme Court Roll. At this point you are an Australian lawyer, but not yet authorised to engage in legal practice.

Apply for a practising certificate

To practise as a solicitor in NSW, you then apply to the Law Society of NSW for a practising certificate. Only once you hold a current Australian practising certificate can you engage in legal practice in NSW.

Can you start PLT before graduating in NSW?

In limited circumstances, yes. LPAB's position is that if your PLT course is not integrated with your academic qualification, you must not commence PLT until after you complete your academic qualification unless all of the following apply:

  • You have no more than two academic subjects left to complete
  • Neither remaining subject is one of the Schedule 1 academic areas of knowledge (the Priestley 11 core subjects)
  • You are enrolled in those remaining subjects while doing PLT
  • You have applied for and received prior permission from LPAB
Law student considering whether to start PLT early before graduating

Students applying for this early commencement approval need to lodge the relevant LPAB application, include reasons why approval should be granted, and attach a letter from the Dean of their law school verifying completion of the Priestley 11 areas and enrolment in the final two remaining non Priestley subjects.

The early commencement rules vary by jurisdiction, so the NSW position above applies specifically to graduates seeking admission in New South Wales. If you are considering admission in another state, the relevant admitting authority in that state sets its own early commencement rules.

What happens after you finish PLT in NSW?

Finishing PLT does not automatically mean you can start practising. In NSW, completing PLT simply makes you eligible to apply for a LPAB compliance certificate. It does not itself make you a lawyer, and it does not permit you to engage in legal practice.

The full sequence is: law degree, then PLT, then LPAB compliance certificate, then Supreme Court admission, then Law Society practising certificate. Only at the final step are you authorised to practise as a solicitor in NSW.

!
Timing note

LPAB recommends lodging your admission application at least five weeks before your intended admission date. Public notice of your admission application is also published for 14 calendar days before a compliance certificate is issued. If you have a particular admission date in mind, start thinking about timing well before your PLT finishes, not after.

How much does PLT cost for NSW admission?

IOLT's PLT course fee is $6,000, the same regardless of which Australian state or territory you are being admitted in. No separate fee applies for using the NSW pathway. The course is the same course whether you are being admitted in Sydney, Perth, Melbourne, or Brisbane. Full details of what is included are on the PLT course information page.

Note that LPAB charges its own application fees for the NSW compliance certificate, and the Supreme Court of NSW charges a separate admission fee. These are NSW admission costs, not PLT course costs, and they apply regardless of which PLT provider you complete your training with. Current fees are published on the LPAB and Supreme Court of NSW websites.

Frequently asked questions about PLT in NSW

Is IOLT accepted for NSW admission?

Yes. IOLT's PLT is accredited by the Legal Practice Board of Western Australia, and LPAB' s own guidance states that PLT courses recognised by another Australian jurisdiction are deemed accredited for NSW admission purposes. IOLT graduates can use their PLT completion letter to apply for an LPAB compliance certificate for admission to the Supreme Court of NSW.

Can I do PLT fully online in NSW?

Yes. IOLT's coursework is delivered 100% online with rolling start dates, so Sydney based graduates and students across regional NSW can complete their PLT coursework from anywhere without attending a campus. The only in person requirement is the admission ceremony itself, which is held at the Supreme Court of NSW in Sydney.

Can I do PLT in Sydney online with IOLT?

Yes. Sydney based law graduates can complete the full 24 week IOLT PLT course online from anywhere in Sydney, including home, a coworking space, or a Sydney CBD paralegal role. There is no campus attendance requirement for coursework. Workplace experience (20 days) can be completed at a Sydney law firm, in house legal team, community legal centre, or other recognised legal environment.

Can I start PLT before I graduate in NSW?

In limited circumstances. LPAB permits early commencement only if you have two subjects or fewer remaining in your law degree, neither is a Priestley 11 core subject, you are enrolled in those remaining subjects while doing PLT, and you have obtained prior LPAB permission. Early commencement requires a formal application to LPAB supported by a letter from your law school's Dean.

How long does IOLT PLT take?

IOLT's PLT is a 24 week program. The 20 days of workplace experience are completed within the same 24 week window, either in a continuous block or spread throughout the program, whichever works better for your circumstances. Students working full time typically choose the spread out option. See the course information page for more detail.

How many days of workplace experience do I need for NSW admission?

IOLT's program requires 20 days of supervised workplace experience as part of the 24 week course. Placements can be at a private law firm, in house corporate legal team, community legal centre, government legal branch, or other recognised legal environment, and can be self arranged or arranged through IOLT.

What if my PLT is old?

LPAB's rules set out currency requirements for both academic qualifications and PLT completion. If your PLT was completed some years ago, LPAB may require additional steps or evidence as part of your admission application. We recommend checking LPAB' s current guidance directly if there is a significant gap between your PLT completion and your planned admission date.

What if I studied overseas or through LPAB top up units?

Overseas qualified applicants and LPAB Diploma in Law applicants follow the same PLT pathway as domestic graduates once their academic qualification has been recognised or topped up. IOLT's online delivery is well suited to overseas qualified applicants because it does not require relocation or attendance at a physical campus. See our international students guide for more detail on the overseas pathway.

Is PLT the same as admission?

No. PLT is the practical training stage that satisfies part of the eligibility requirements for admission. Admission itself is a separate step, governed by LPAB and the Supreme Court of NSW, and requires a compliance certificate followed by an admission ceremony. And admission is separate again from the practising certificate you need to practise as a solicitor.

How much does PLT cost for NSW admission?

IOLT's PLT course fee is $6,000, the same regardless of which state you are being admitted in. LPAB charges separate application fees for the NSW compliance certificate, and the Supreme Court of NSW charges an admission fee. These are admission costs rather than PLT course costs. See the PLT course information page for details of what the course fee covers.
