Overview

Becoming an Australian lawyer with an overseas law degree

Becoming an Australian lawyer with a foreign qualification involves a structured regulatory pathway designed to align overseas qualifications with Australian legal standards. The journey begins with a formal Academic Assessment by a state Legal Profession Admission Board to determine degree equivalence. Most candidates then complete top-up subjects (the Priestley 11) at an accredited Australian university.

Once academic requirements and English proficiency (IELTS or PTE) are met, the final bridge to practice is Practical Legal Training. Completing the pathway leads to admission to the Supreme Court, giving national portability to practise as a solicitor anywhere in Australia. The full process typically takes 12 to 24 months, depending on how many top-ups are required. The PLT component with IOLT is 24 weeks and costs $6,000 AUD, the same fee as domestic students.

The Pathway

Your pathway to Australian admission

A four-step roadmap from overseas qualification to practising as an Australian solicitor.

01
Step 01 · Academic Assessment

Have your qualification assessed

The first step is to have your existing qualification formally assessed by a state Legal Profession Admission Board. You typically apply to the board in the state where you intend to be admitted, or where you currently live in Australia. The board will determine degree equivalence and tell you exactly which additional subjects you need to complete, or whether you need to undertake an Australian law degree.

02
Step 02 · Academic Top-Ups

Complete any required top-up subjects

Based on your assessment, complete any identified gap subjects at an accredited Australian university. Most overseas graduates complete a selection of the Priestley 11 core subjects, such as Constitutional Law, Ethics, or Property Law.

Many jurisdictions allow concurrent study, meaning you can often commence PLT while you have two or fewer academic subjects remaining, provided those subjects are electives and not Priestley 11 core requirements.

04
Step 04 · Admission & Practising Certificate

Get admitted and begin practice

Once PLT is complete, you move for admission at a Supreme Court. The ceremony is a formal in-person hearing where an admitted lawyer moves your admission, you take an oath or affirmation, and you sign the Roll of Practitioners. You can choose from:

  • Supreme Court of NSW (Sydney)
  • Supreme Court of QLD (Brisbane)
  • Supreme Court of WA (Perth)
  • Supreme Court of ACT (Canberra)
  • Supreme Court of NT (Darwin)

After your ceremony, you apply for a practising certificate to practise in any Australian jurisdiction. A first practising certificate is typically restricted for the first 18 to 24 months of supervised practice.

Detailed Roadmap

The Australian admission roadmap

A detailed breakdown of each milestone, what is required, and the key details international graduates should know at each stage.

# Milestone Action required Key details
01 Academic Assessment Submit transcripts and degree details to the Legal Profession Admission Board (LPAB) in your target state. The board assesses your degree against the Australian LLB or JD. You pay a fee and provide certified original transcripts.
02 Top-Up Subjects Enrol at an accredited Australian university to complete the gap units identified in your assessment. Most overseas graduates complete specific Priestley 11 subjects (such as Constitutional Law, Ethics, or Property Law).
03 English Proficiency Achieve the required score in IELTS Academic or PTE Academic. Generally IELTS 7.5 overall with 8.0 in writing, or equivalent. Exemptions may apply if your degree was taught in English in a recognised country.
04 PLT Coursework Enrol in an accredited program such as IOLT's Practical Legal Training course. Focus on practical skills rather than academic theory. 100% online coursework plus 20 days of workplace experience.
05 Suitability Check Disclose any 'show cause' events to prove you are a 'fit and proper person'. Disclose criminal history, academic misconduct, or bankruptcy, and provide character references.
06 Admission Ceremony Move for admission at a Supreme Court (e.g. WA or QLD). A formal in-person hearing where an admitted lawyer moves your admission. You take an oath and sign the Roll of Practitioners.
07 Practising Certificate Apply for your first Restricted Practising Certificate from the state Law Society. After admission you cannot practise until you hold this certificate. Typically restricted for the first 18 to 24 months of supervised practice.

Common Questions

Frequently asked questions

Is my overseas law degree recognised in Australia?

Your overseas law degree needs to be formally assessed by a state Legal Profession Admission Board. The board will compare your degree against the Australian LLB or JD and identify any gap subjects (top-ups) you need to complete. The number of top-ups varies depending on your degree and the jurisdiction you apply to.

How long does the full pathway take?

The full pathway from initial academic assessment to admission typically takes 12 to 24 months, depending on how many top-up subjects you need to complete and how quickly you can finish them. The PLT component itself is 24 weeks. Students who need fewer top-ups can move through faster.

Can I start PLT before finishing my top-up units?

In many cases, yes. Most jurisdictions allow concurrent study if you have two or fewer academic units remaining and those units are electives (not Priestley 11 core requirements). This can accelerate your path to a practising certificate. Read the full course information.

Can I complete PLT from overseas?

Yes. IOLT's coursework is 100% online, so you can complete the coursework component from anywhere in the world. However, the 20 days of workplace experience must be completed in a qualifying Australian legal environment, and you will need to attend your admission ceremony in person in Australia.

Do I need an Australian visa to study PLT?

If you are studying offshore, you may not need a student visa for the online coursework component. If you are onshore in Australia, you must hold a visa with study rights (such as a 500, 485, or certain bridging visas). Visa requirements should always be confirmed with the Department of Home Affairs.

What is the Priestley 11?

The Priestley 11 are the eleven core law subjects required for admission in Australia: Criminal Law and Procedure, Torts, Contracts, Property, Equity (including Trusts), Company Law, Administrative Law, Federal and State Constitutional Law, Civil Procedure, Evidence, and Professional Conduct (Ethics). Assessment boards compare your overseas degree against these subjects to identify any gaps.

What IELTS score do I need to become a lawyer in Australia?

English proficiency requirements vary by jurisdiction but generally require an IELTS score of 7.5 overall with 8.0 in writing, or equivalent PTE Academic scores. Exemptions may apply if your law degree was taught entirely in English in a recognised English-speaking country. Always check with the specific admitting authority for their current requirements.

How much does the entire pathway cost?

The PLT component with IOLT costs $6,000, the same as domestic students with no international surcharge. The total pathway cost also includes academic assessment fees (varies by state), university top-up unit fees (varies by university and number of subjects), IELTS or PTE test fees, admission application fees, and state practising certificate fees. The PLT component is the most predictable and affordable part of the process.

Is an Indian law degree valid in Australia?

An Indian law degree is not directly valid for practising law in Australia, but it can form the basis of your pathway to admission. You will need to have your Indian LLB assessed by a state Legal Profession Admission Board, complete any required top-up subjects to cover gaps against the Australian Priestley 11 requirements, meet English proficiency standards, and then complete Practical Legal Training. Many Indian LLB graduates have successfully completed this pathway.

Does IOLT help with workplace experience placements?

Yes. We provide the framework, supervision guidelines, and mentorship required to ensure your workplace experience meets admissions standards. IOLT-arranged placements are available subject to availability; many students also arrange their own placement at a firm of their choice.
